CITY OF CANALS, GUIDED WALKING TOURS ALLONG THE CANALS

Famous for its beautiful canals which were used for transportation of cargo by ship in the 17e century. Amsterdam is called the Venice of the North and very nice to make a walkingtour away from the tourists were the locals are. Discover it with a guide and come at spots which you will not find on your on.

Canal Houses. Houses are made of brick and placed alongside the various canals. Facing the canals with their small sides, it gave the city the so well known gables which are all different. All together Amsterdam has more than 1000 bridges and many kilometers of canals. The most famous one is the Herengracht with big mansions up to twenty rooms. Much of the richness of the civilians of the 17e century can be found in these wealthy merchant mansions.

Paintings This age produced also a vast number of paintings. The story is that on a population of 2,5 million inhabitants in the Netherlands 1 million paintings were available. Amsterdam took the major part of it and housed a great number of famous painters like Rembrandt, Van Goyen, Jan Steen, Claes, Hondekoeter and many others, a part of them can be found in the Rijksmuseum. 

VOC, From the Voc trade lots of schipping trade remains can be found such as the Scheepvaarthuis the Admirality and Bickers Island. You need an experienced guide to find them 

Jews. More then 10% of the population of Amsterdam was Jewish. That is an explanation for the Diamond industry still to be seen in Amsterdam. The city had also the biggest Synagogue in Europe dating from the 17e century. During World War II a lot of these Jews were deported to the concentracion camps. The most famous Jewish story told in Amsterdam is that of Anne Frank who ended up in the concentration camp herself.
